Faith, Prayers, and Visualization

During my teenage years, I remember studying the Bible on my own. A Bible was lying around the house, which no one read. So I opened it up and began to read. What I found amazed me. The Bible taught a life philosophy, a way of living life successfully if followed. It was also a kind of self-help book, in that it explained how to handle all of life’s problems.

In reading the Bible, it became clear to me that the single ingredient most responsible for successfully overcoming life’s problems was faith. Consider the following verses as examples:

Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
–Matthew 9:29

Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
–Mark 11:23

What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
–Mark 11:24

Since I was having my share of problems, I thought “Wow! If only I could get enough faith and solve all of my problems. I could have an amazing life!” So I began looking into how to acquire more faith. I knew that faith was believing that a specific thing will occur in the near or distant future, kind of like the placebo effect in the medical field or the self-fulfilling prophecy in the psychology field.

But the question was how do you get it or get more of it? It wasn’t until years later that I finally got my answer.

In my early twenties, I was trapped in a certain negative situation. There was no way out. I had very little money and no power to change the situation. But rather than giving up and becoming depressed about it, I instead began to pray. I prayed daily to escape the negative situation. And during my prayer sessions, I did something that I had never done before — I used visualization! Along with my prayers, I would visualize myself escaping from my negative situation as if I were in a movie.

At first, my visualizations were blurry and unfocused. But the more I practiced, the clearer and more focused the visualizations became. And eventually, I began to visualize in a crystal-clear and pristine manner. Then about a month later, I was abruptly removed from the negative situation that I was trapped in. It happened so fast that it made my head spin!

Now like most of you, I’ve had my fair share of prayers not answered the way I preferred. But I also noticed that during these prayers, I tended not to use visualization. On the other hand, the prayers where I did use visualization tended to be answered the way I preferred. So it seems to me that visualization is a kind of added power to prayer. A kind of faith.
